The government is planning an exit exam for MBBS students passing out of government as well as private medical colleges to focus on the concerns over the standard of medical colleges and the quality of doctors being produced in the country. The move is a part of the wide-ranging reforms in the medical sector which is being considered by a high-powered committee led by the Niti Aayog vice-chairman along with the PM’s additional principal secretary and the Niti Aayog CEO.
It is quite noteworthy that the panel is also set to recommend the abolition of the Medical Council of India (MCI) and replace it with a National Medical Commission (NMC) which will comprise of four independent boards to supervise under-graduate and post-graduate education, accreditation and rating of colleges, medical registrar and ethics.
