Doctors at AIIMS New Delhi carried out a complex, life-saving operation on a 43-year-old woman from West Bengal with advanced colon cancer, successfully removing nearly 20 kilograms of tumor tissue. The patient presented with marked abdominal distension and had a prior history of unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. She was subsequently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and underwent multiple cycles of chemotherapy, but the disease continued to progress, with imaging showing extensive spread within the abdomen and a projected survival of only a few months.
Despite being considered inoperable based on CT and PET-CT findings, the medical team pursued an aggressive cytoreductive strategy.
