Air pollution continues to pose a major health threat in Delhi, contributing to nearly 15% of all deaths in 2023, according to an analysis of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 data by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME). The findings estimate that 17,188 deaths in the capital were linked to ambient particulate matter exposure, equating to one in every seven deaths. While the union government maintains that a direct correlation between air pollution and mortality cannot be conclusively established, the GBD study remains one of the world’s most robust assessments of disease and death determinants across populations.
