Subclinical pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is typically identified during community screenings, yet its prevalence remains poorly understood. Now, researchers have analyzed data from 12 surveys conducted in eight African and four Asian countries to evaluate the prevalence of subclinical pulmonary TB. Among 620,682 participants, 1,944 had TB. Surprisingly, 82.8% of TB patients had no persistent cough, and 62.5% had no cough at all.
Moreover, 29.1% of TB patients without persistent cough and 23.1% of TB patients without any cough exhibited high bacterial loads in their sputum. The study has sparked concerns that the increased prevalence of subclinical pulmonary TB in Africa and Asia could lead to greater infection rates and worsen the TB burden in these regions.
