Anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) use has been linked to increased mortality rates, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) accounting for a portion of these deaths. However, the occurrence of CVD among AAS users remains poorly understood. To address this gap, a study has assessed the incidence of CVD in 1,189 male AAS users, comparing them to 59,450 matched individuals from the general population.
Over an 11-year follow-up period, AAS users experienced a significantly higher incidence of cardiovascular events compared to controls. Specifically, AAS use was associated with an increased risk of acute myocardial infarction (adjusted Hazard Ratio [aHR] β 3.00), percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft (aHR β 2.95), venous thromboembolism (aHR β 2.42), arrhythmias (aHR β 2.26), cardiomyopathy (aHR β 8.90), and heart failure (aHR β 3.63).
