Anemia in acquired heart disease is one of the common problems. However, there is very less evidence for anemia in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). A study published in the Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology reported that the occurrence of anemia in CHD patients was similar to that of the normal population and iron deficiency anemia was responsible for most of the cases. Moreover, there were no significant differences in mortality between CHD patients with and without anemia.

A total of 544 successive stable noncyanotic CHD patients (median age: 30 [22; 41] years ) were considered to evaluate demographic, clinical, and analytic parameters. According to the study, 9% of CHD patients had anemia. Likewise, patients with complex anatomy demonstrated the highest prevalence of anemia (33%).
