Researchers have reported that taking certain antidepressants during pregnancy may pose a threat to the brain development of the child. The study was based on brain scan analysis of nearly 100 infants of mothers who took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) during pregnancy. The study was conducted on mothers of 18-45 years of age during pregnancy in 2011 to 2016. Similarly, all mothers were examined for depression before, during and after pregnancy.
Mothers who were on SSRI during their pregnancy were allotted to the SSRI group and new-borns were scanned at a normal age of 1.5 weeks. The brain scans demonstrated substantial growth in the size of the amygdala and insula gray matter in infants of the SSRI group when compared with those born to mothers who were diagnosed with depression, but not given an SSRI as well as infants of moms without depression.
