Sugar-sweetened beverages ( SSBs ) have emerged as a potential dietary factor influencing mental health, while anxiety disorders continue to rise among adolescents. To examine this relationship, a systematic review assessed the association between SSB intake and anxiety disorders in this age group. Across nine included studies, seven demonstrated a significant positive association between SSB consumption and anxiety, while two showed no significant link. The two longitudinal studies identified small but persistent associations over a one-year period.

In the meta-analysis, higher SSB intake was associated with a 34% increase in the odds of anxiety disorders. These findings suggest that greater consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to an increased risk of anxiety among adolescents. Reference : Khaled K, Abdulbaki N, Almilaji O, et al.
