Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common pediatric condition associated with hearing loss and developmental delays, and while tympanostomy tube (TT) placement is standard treatment, recurrence and reoperation after extrusion remain concerns. To address this gap, a study evaluated the effectiveness of autoinflation in reducing OME recurrence and reoperation rates in 66 children following tube extrusion. The study found that lower recurrence rates with autoinflation [19.2%) compared with observation (35.7%) and reduced reoperation rates (7.7%).

Tympanogram findings remained stable in the autoinflation group (type A: 73.1%] to 76.9%; type C: 26.9% to 23.1%), whereas the observation group showed worsening tympanograms (type A: 75.0% to 57.1%; type C: 25.0% to 42.9%). These findings suggest that autoinflation after tympanostomy tube extrusion is a safe and feasible noninvasive strategy…
