Bariatric surgery is associated with remission of diabetes and prevention of diabetic complications in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes. A recent study indicates that bariatric surgery reduces the risk for microvascular complications, interestingly, to an even greater degree among people with prediabetes. This article summarizes the results of a study that demonstrates the long-term benefits of bariatric surgery in obese patients. Prediabetes is a pathological state in which blood sugar is high, but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes.
