Doctors at Medicover Hospital in Bengaluru recently managed an unusual pediatric gastrointestinal emergency after successfully removing a 480 g trichobezoar along with multiple rubber bands and balloon fragments from the stomach and small intestine of a 2-year-old child. The toddler was brought to the hospital with persistent abdominal pain, recurrent vomiting, poor oral intake, and progressive feeding intolerance that had worsened over several days. Clinical assessment and imaging revealed a large intragastric mass extending into the small bowel, prompting urgent surgical intervention.
According to the treating team, the child had reportedly been ingesting hair strands, rubber bands, and small balloon pieces over time, a presentation associated with pica-related behavior.
