Bengaluru is witnessing a sharp rise in pneumonia cases among children, with even vaccinated kids falling ill. Several pediatricians attribute this surge to the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. A consultant pediatrician and intensivist reported seeing around ten pediatric pneumonia cases caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. He emphasized that commonly used pneumonia treatments are becoming ineffective.
He further stressed that antibiotic resistance is exacerbated by parents self-medicating their children for temporary relief. Another pediatrician and neonatologist observed that community-acquired mycoplasma pneumonia is increasingly common, particularly in children aged two to 12.
