The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued guidelines for the ethical use of leftover, anonymous, and de-identified biomedical samples generated from diagnostic and surgical procedures of commercial use. Key points from the guidelines The samples include organs, parts of organs, tissues, cells, blood and its products, saliva, urine, DNA, RNA, hair, nail clippings, and body fluids. Blood products that are positive for HIV , HBV, HCV, and syphilis and expired blood also can be utilized for commercial use. The sources of the samples include patients, autopsy specimens, tissue banks, organ donation centers, and IVF clinics.

These biomedical waste samples can be used for research, development of diagnostic kits, identification of disease markers, and similar purposes. Hospitals and other health facilities must make the samples completely anonymous. Companies that utilize these…
