Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder in which feelings, thoughts, behaviors, and perceptions are altered in the context of episodes of mania and depression. A child with bipolar disorder swings between periods of mania or less severe hypomania and depression. During manic or less severe hypomanic episodes, a child experiences an elevated mood and energy level.
