A large U.S. trial has shown promising results for Galleri, a multi-cancer early detection blood test developed by an American biotechnology company, Grail, which can screen for over 50 types of cancer. The test works by detecting fragments of tumor DNA circulating in the bloodstream, often identifying malignancies before symptoms appear. In the Pathfinder 2 study, which included more than 23,000 symptom-free participants from the U.S.
and Canada, the test correctly identified cancer in about 62% of people who had a “cancer signal” in their blood and accurately ruled out cancer in 99.6% of those who were disease-free. Importantly, in 92% of positive cases, Galleri could also pinpoint the likely organ or tissue of origin, helping clinicians direct further diagnostic testing efficiently.
