Women who breastfeed their babies for six months or more may cut the risk of developing diabetes in the future by nearly half reported a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine. The previous research studies have evidenced the long-term benefits of breastfeeding in lowering the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The current study demonstrated a significant association between breastfeeding duration and lowering the risk of developing diabetes, even after accounting for all possible confounding risk factors.

Moreover, the study reported a 47 % reduction in their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, when compared to those who did not breastfeed at all.
