Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are generally used to treat hypertension . However, the use of CCBs is hypothesized to be associated with glaucoma risk. A recent study analyzed data from 427,480 adults from the UK Biobank to find whether using CCBs increases the risk of glaucoma . Among the participants, 33,175 were CCB users. The use of CCBs was associated with an increased risk of glaucoma (odds ratio [OR] β 1.39) and thinner macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (-0.34 ΞΌm) and macular retinal nerve fiber layer (-0.16 ΞΌm) thicknesses.
However, there was no association between the use of CCBs and intraocular pressure. The study suggests that using CCBs may be associated with IOP-independent glaucomatous neurodegeneration . In addition, the study recommends clinicians consider replacing or discontinuing CCB in case of glaucoma progression. Have you noticed glaucoma progression inβ¦
