Cardiovascular risk factors are associated with an increased dementia risk. However, the preventive effects of cardiovascular drugs on dementia remain unclear. A Swedish study has investigated the association between various classes of cardiovascular medications and dementia incidence in 88,065 dementia patients and 880,000 controls aged 70 and older. The study found that using antihypertensives, diuretics, lipid-lowering drugs (LLDs), and oral anticoagulants (OACs) for five years or above is associated with fewer incidences of dementia (odds ratio [OR] โ 0.75-0.91) than non-users.
In addition, using antihypertensives in combination with diuretics, OACs, and LLDs was associated with an even greater reduction in dementia diagnoses (OR โ 0.66-0.84). In contrast, antiplatelets use was related to a higher incidence of dementia (OR โ 1.13-1.25). These findings suggest that the long-term useโฆ
