There are several etiological factors associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). But, can loneliness also be associated with the condition? Researchers at Western Norway University have studied the association between loneliness and the risk of developing T2D in a 20-year follow-up study. Further, they also examined whether symptoms of depression and insomnia mediate any association between loneliness and T2D. Data from the HUNT study, which aimed to address diabetes, hypertension, TB, mental illness, and the quality of life, was utilized by researchers.

The study found that of the 24,024 participants, 4.9% developed T2D . These participants were more likely to be men (59%), with a higher mean age of 48 years .
