Certain diets, such as the Mediterranean diet, are associated with a reduced risk of dementia . However, the inflammatory effects of diets on the risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease  (AD) remain unclear. A recent study has examined this association in 1,487 individuals aged 60 and older utilizing Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) scores. Over 13.1 years, the study discovered that pro-inflammatory diets were associated with an increased incidence of all-cause dementia (hazard ratio [HR] ­– 1.21) and AD (HR – 1.20).

In addition, when participants were grouped based on DII scores, those with the highest DII scores had an increased risk of developing all-cause dementia (84%) and AD (88%). The findings suggest a link between pro-inflammatory diets and dementia, emphasizing that adopting anti-inflammatory diets may help prevent dementia later in life. Should…
