The harmful effects of sweetened drinks on one’s health are well known. A recent study has revealed that regular consumption of sweetened beverages is associated with an increased risk of liver cancer Β  in postmenopausal women. Researchers hypothesize that increased sugar Β  consumption could lead to insulin resistance and an increase in fatty deposits around the liver β€” both of which are known risk factors for liver cancer. Therefore, reducing the intake of sweetened beverages might serve as a public health strategy to reduce the liver cancer burden.

However, further studies in men and other populations are required to understand better the association between liver cancer and high sugar intake.
