Poor diet can have a detrimental impact on mental health. Nevertheless, the evidence for the effects of dietary interventions on mood and mental well-being are lacking. In this regard, a new study published in the journal “Psychosomatic Medicine” reported that dietary interventions hold promise for reducing symptoms of low mood and depression.

The meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials inclusive of 45,826 individuals with or without clinical depression (age between 21 to 85 years) demonstrated that dietary interventions significantly reduced depressive symptoms (P=0.002). Changes in symptoms were assessed using the total scores from the measures such as Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), etc. Moreover, women showed significantly greater benefits from dietary interventions, for symptoms of both depression and anxiety.…
