It is no exaggeration to suggest that hospitals can be unintentional incubators of intolerable stress for healthcare professionals (HCPs). This stress harms everyone involved — not just HCPs but also their families, patients, and institutions. Several studies have suggested that the suicide rate for clinicians is higher than that for any other profession, due to the stress of medical school, malpractice suits, and sleep deprivation.
According to research, affected HCPs can experience difficulty sleeping, decreased job satisfaction, guilt, and anxiety (including fear of litigation or job loss), and recurrent memories of the event, all of which can contribute to more serious consequences such as stress, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal ideation.
