At least 35 individuals who underwent cataract surgery at a government hospital in Kolkata have experienced vision loss. These surgeries took place during a medical camp conducted in the last week of June. Among the affected, 18 patients were referred to the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) for further treatment. An initial investigation at the government hospital revealed that medications and fluids used during the surgery were contaminated, leading to eye infections.

At RIO, ophthalmologists performed corrective surgeries on the patients and treated their eye infections. According to a doctor, 17 patients had shown improvement in their vision, while one patient, in his mid-70s, might suffer permanent vision loss in one eye.
