Gujarat has reported the deaths of 13 children due to a rare Chandipura virus infection. A total of 29 cases have been reported in Gujarat (26), Rajasthan (2), and Madhya Pradesh (1). Two more deaths have occurred in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Chandipura virus was first identified in Chandipura village, Maharashtra, in 1965. It caused an encephalitis outbreak in India, resulting in the deaths of 322 children in the early 2000s. Chandipura virus is primarily transmitted by infected sandflies.
It is predominantly found in rural areas, affecting children aged nine months to 14 years. Symptoms of Chandipura virus infection include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and headache.
