Chronic dacryocystitis is a common ocular disorder. However, its incidence in recent times is on decline, in past its occurrence was very common. In my experience in 1970s we used to have 3 to 4 cases of chronic dacryocystitis. Probably the main reason those days was cooking of food by burning wood and the wooden smoke was a risk factor for the occurrence of chronic dacryocystitis.
Since 90 percent cases were females as they were the one to cook food moreover it was more common in rural areas since their only means of cooking food was burning wood now with economic development we are hardly using wood as means of cooking food. At present in the era of cooking ranges and other electrical devices even in rural areas hence this may be the main factor in decline of incidence of this disorder of chronic dacryocystitis.
