Despite being considered proarrhythmic, the effect of caffeinated coffee consumption on atrial fibrillation (AF) has not been studied until now. A randomized clinical trial evaluated coffee consumption in 200 adults with persistent AF or atrial flutter with a history of AF, with a mean age of 69 years. Over six months, participants assigned to consume caffeinated coffee, averaging seven cups per week, had a lower rate of AF or atrial flutter recurrence at 47% compared with 64% among those who abstained from coffee. Coffee consumption was associated with a 39% lower risk of AF or atrial flutter recurrence.
These findings suggest that regular intake of caffeinated coffee, at about one cup per day, may reduce the risk of recurrent atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter in patients with a history of these arrhythmias. ##Reference## Wong CX, Cheung CC, Montenegro G, et al. Caffeinated…
