Corticosteroids were found to be useful in maintenance therapy of autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). Using low dose effectively lowered the relapse rate and longer survival as compared to patients who stopped taking corticosteroids. Standard therapy of AIP is usually done by corticosteroids. However, its requirement for treating long-term treatment in preventing disease relapse is controversial.

A present randomized controlled clinical study revealed that patient administered with a low dose of corticosteroids as a part of maintenance therapy over a period of three years showed promising results. The patients getting this maintenance therapy showed decreased relapse rate as compare to patients who has discontinued the therapy after 26 weeks.
