A team of surgeons at the UAE-funded Children's Hospital in London successfully separated craniopagus twins by performing three major surgeries that took more than 50 hours to complete. According to the doctors, the most appropriate age to perform a craniopagus separation surgery is between 6 – 12 months. In the present case, the twins were already 19-months old by the time their parents could arrange enough money for the surgery. In addition, the surgery was complicated due to the different physiological needs of the babies.

Moreover, the survival of one baby posed a risk to that of the other. To carry out the surgery, doctors first created a replica of the twin’s head using virtual reality to visualize the structure of the fused skulls and the intertwined blood vessels.
