Can stem-cell therapy provide a definitive cure for diabetes? This has remained a long-standing question in diabetes research. A recently published paper in Stem Cell Reports has finally provided an answer. Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine have observed that stem cells, that can be transformed into insulin-producing beta cells, can control the blood glucose level in mice that could not previously produce insulin.

The transplanted cells behaved similarly to beta cells and responded “quickly and appropriately” when they encountered glucose. Given the rising incidence of diabetes and the high number of people who fail to obtain glycaemic control in spite of the present management strategies, finding a cure to the progressively debilitating disease can provide hope to millions.
