A 48-year-old woman with advanced renal cell cancer (RCC) was admitted for incision and drainage of the right renal abscess. However, she complained that her QID dry-to-dry dressing changes were immensely painful. She weighed 112 kgs and had been a nurse herself. She rated the pain in her area of the incision as a 2 or 3 on a scale of 1-10; however, she complained that the pain she had to endure during dressing was nearly 10. She had been advised to take oxycodone and acetaminophen to manage pain in between the dressing sessions.
However, she was given 2 mg IV dose of morphine during dressing, which could barely reduce her pain. Suggest the IV dose of morphine that you would prefer for her next dressing.
