Among other effects, the trauma of war affects the vestibular system of war veterans. The prominent condition includes a cluster of medically unexplained chronic symptoms of joint pain, indigestion, insomnia and dizziness. A group of researchers at Rutgers University identified the prevalence of reduced vestibular function and poor balance in the veterans. To improve this condition, the researchers developed an electrical stimulator attached to a Walkman sized box, generating a low-level, random electrical noise pattern, imperceptible to the wearer.
The random noise pattern travels to inner ear, improving the balance. It is expected that restoring equilibrium might alleviate other chronic symptoms of war illness. Source: ScienceDaily
