Sever’s disease, also known as Calcaneal apophysitis, is an inflammation of the calcaneal apophysis. It is the most common aetiology of heel pain in children experiencing growth spurts. However, the symptoms are often overlooked due to lack of awareness about the condition or improper diagnosis. Sever’s disease is a common musculoskeletal injury in children aged between 8-15 years.
It is a painful self-limiting condition, particularly presented in kids active in high-impact sports (football, basketball or soccer). Repetitive microtrauma at the calcaneal apophysis- a cartilaginous growth center, where the Achilles tendon and calcaneal tuberosity unite- results in inflammation followed by pain in that area.
