Severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) may be associated with subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) because of large-volume blood loss leading to hypoperfusion and ischemia. A recent study examined this association both independently and in combination with preeclampsia, a condition strongly linked to new-onset postpartum CVD. The study analyzed data from more than 38 million deliveries, of which 3.9% were complicated by PPH.
Within one year of delivery, patients with PPH requiring transfusion had approximately a 2.6-fold increased risk of overall and CVD-related mortality and a 67% higher risk of CVD-related readmission compared with patients without PPH. When compared with patients without PPH, those with PPH requiring transfusion showed a twofold increased risk of CVD readmission among normotensive patients and a 36% increased risk among patients with preeclampsia.
