The Mediterranean diet (MD) has long been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, various types of cancer, and type 2 diabetes. To further investigate its potential benefits, a systematic review of 31 studies examined the relationship between adherence to the MD and the risk of breast cancer . The meta-analysis found that adherence to the MD was significantly associated with a 13% reduction in breast cancer risk. This protective effect was especially evident among postmenopausal women, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.88.

In contrast, no significant association was observed in premenopausal women (HR: 0.98). Geographically, the strongest protective effect was seen in Asian populations (odds ratio [OR]: 0.59), followed by more modest effects in American (OR: 0.92) and European (OR: 0.90) populations.
