Dry eye is a widespread condition, yet its true prevalence has been unclear. To address this, new research presented at the Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons examined its impact on the general population in both the U.S. and Europe. In the U.S., a survey of 2,003 adults revealed that half of the participants experienced dry eye symptoms.
Despite this, only 17% had been formally diagnosed by an eye care professional. Nearly 80% reported fatigue, itchy, or watery eyes, and up to three-quarters said their symptoms interfered with everyday activities such as using digital devices or driving. Alarmingly, 70% were unaware of available treatment options, and 40% did not know that untreated dry eye could lead to further complications.
