The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has reaffirmed that eggs sold in India are safe to eat and has dismissed recent reports suggesting a link between egg consumption and cancer as unsubstantiated and misleading. The clarification follows media and social media claims about the detection of nitrofuran metabolites, including AOZ, in eggs. FSSAI explained that nitrofurans are banned for use in poultry and egg production under existing food safety regulations. The authority has defined an Extraneous Maximum Residue Limit of 1.0 Β΅g/kg only to support regulatory monitoring.
