Ehrlichiosis, tick-borne rickettsial disease, was initially recognized as a disease in the United States in late 1980’s. Although a majority of reported cases are due to Ehrlichia chaffeensis , it is caused by both E. chaffeensis and E. ewingii . The few studies investigated the prevalence of ehrlichiosis in India using a conventional examination of stained blood smears and reported a prevalence of 0.35% in Punjab, 18.9% in Nagpur and 55% in stray dogs in Maharashtra.
