Endometrial cancer is the sixth most common cancer affecting women worldwide. It is mainly seen in elderly women, above 50 years of age. The ESMO guidelines published in 2013 intended to provide solutions to current challenges in diagnosis and treatment of endometrial cancer. The most common cause of type I endometrial cancer is having too much of the hormone estrogen compared to the hormone progesterone in the body. This happens in polycystic ovary syndrome, tamoxifen therapy, anovulation, and nulliparity.
Other than this, multiple risk factors have been identified which include obesity (body mass index >30), hypertension, and diabetes mellitus.
