When we were students many decades back, pre-clinical course was for three solid years (including one-year pre-professional course (PPC). This was for a minority and for the rest of it was an extended course from six months to years (known as referred batch). High failure rate was the norm than exception. Some students were packed off home after failing to clear PPC exam in three attempts. In those days’ humanitarian considerations, social responsibility, loss to students, community, caste, area considerations, etc., were not common currency. Later that rule was revoked.

There were rumors that highly powerful persons who were related to some of those in the sent-home category took note of it. When they took note of it, matters were settled to the satisfaction of all.
