An expert panel formed by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has recommended that a doctor’s prescription be mandatory for accessing hormonal contraceptive pills. The proposal aims to address concerns about the adverse effects associated with hormonal contraceptive use. Currently, hormonal contraceptives are available over-the-counter at pharmacies under Schedule K of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules 1945.
The expert panel, comprising a senior gynecologist, a senior official from the Tamil Nadu drug administration, and a reproductive health scientist from the ICMR, has recommended moving hormonal contraceptives to Schedule H, which lists prescription-only medications.
