As large parts of India continue to experience intense summer temperatures, new research highlights the substantial mortality burden associated with extreme heat events. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Environmental Health estimates that a single day of extreme heat may result in approximately 3,400 excess deaths nationwide, while a five-day heatwave could contribute to nearly 30,000 excess deaths. The analysis was conducted by Dr. Piyush Narang and Dr.
Ashok Gadgil of the India Energy and Climate Center at the University of California Berkeley. Using district-level mortality data from India's Civil Registration System and population projections for 2024, the researchers modeled heat-related mortality across the country's districts. Their findings suggest that the impact of heat is far from evenly distributed. Uttar Pradesh was estimated to account for more than 8,000โฆ
