The USFDA has approved the first neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor antagonist, fezolinetant , for treating moderate to severe hot flashes or vasomotor symptoms caused by menopause . NK3 receptor in the brain involves in regulating body temperature. Fezolinetant blocks the NK3 receptor activities and thus decreases hot flashes and night sweats caused by menopause. The approval of fezolinetant was granted based on the findings of two clinical trials.
The clinical trials were conducted on 1,022 postmenopausal women aged 54 years. The participants were treated with fezolinetant or placebo and evaluated at weeks 4 and 12. Thereafter, the participants were treated further alternatively with fezolinetant or placebo every 12 weeks up to 52 weeks. Fezolinetant treatment significantly reduced the frequency and severity of moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms at weeks 4 and 12 compared to placebo.…
