The USFDA has recently approved lenacapavir for treating HIV-1 infection in adult patients. Lenacapavir is the first FDA-approved drug that inhibits capsid and thus interferes with the viral lifecycle. In addition, lenacapavir therapy is for HIV-1 patients who develop intolerance and resistance to already available therapies. The approval of lenacapavir was based on clinical trials conducted on 72 patients with multi-drug resistance HIV infections.
In the clinical trial, 87.5% of patients achieved a reduction in virus levels after 14 days of lenacapavir treatment compared to 16.7% of patients in the placebo group. After further examination, 81% of patients achieved significant HIV RNA suppression with undetectable viral load after 26 weeks of treatment.
