The US FDA has recently approved Plecanatide for Irritable Bowel Syndrome type c (IBS-C). Just a year ago the same drug was approved by the federal agency for chronic idiopathic constipation. In India, the prevalence of IBS is estimated to be 10-20% with an incidence of 1-2% per year. Among different types of IBS, IBS-C is manifested with abdominal pain, constipation and incomplete (and infrequent) bowel movement.
With the approval of the new drug Plecanatide, physicians now have one more option for the management of the condition. The approval came after the clinical trials that established the safety of the drug at its efficacy in addressing constipation and abdominal pain experienced by the IBS-C patients.
