Fertility preservation is the effort to help patients retain their fertility or ability to procreate. Populations who could benefit from fertility preservation in childhood/adolescence include patients with cancer and nononcologic conditions requiring gonadotoxic chemotherapy, patients with differences/disorders of sex development, and transgender individuals. In this regard, a recent study was conducted to develop technologies that will enable immature eggs and sperm to mature and produce a biological child in the future.
Fertility preservation options for prepubertal patients with fertility altering conditions such as cancer and differences/disorders of sex development are limited.
