The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is rising globally, leading to substantial morbidity, mainly due to complications like peripheral neuropathy (PN), retinopathy , and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN). A recent study investigated the effect of bariatric surgery on improving PN, CAN, and retinopathy in obese individuals (BMI > 35 kg/m 2 ). The study was performed on 127 participants, and the results indicated improvement in all metabolic risk factors except for BP and total cholesterol. Two years post bariatric surgery, PN outcomes improved while CAN and retinopathy were found to be stable.

Enhanced reduction in fasting glucose was found to be associated with improvements in retinopathy. These findings indicate that bariatric surgery may be an effective method to reverse PN in obese individuals. However, more controlled trials are needed to test the effect of bariatric surgery in…
