The longevity of severe pain in first 24 hours post-surgery may predict the postsurgical chronic pain after one year, according to the new study published. The observational study conducted, assessed patients who underwent surgery for selected procedures spanning 11 European countries. Many times the persistent pain is reported after various surgical procedures. The proposed risk factors for post-surgical pain include perioperative nerve injury and individual differences in pain tolerance.

Post-surgical pain may be of both inflammatory, visceral and neuropathic origins or the combination of any of these.
