Several home remedies that enable contraction of the diaphragm and closing of the epiglottis are used for relieving hiccups. Researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio  described a low-cost, effective intervention- forced inspiratory suction and swallow tool (FISST) to relieve hiccups. The results of the study were published in the journal JAMA Network Open. FISST is a rigid drinking tube with an inlet valve that requires forceful suction to draw water from a cup into the mouth.

Forceful suction induces the diaphragm to contract and epiglottis to close, stimulating two nerves- the phrenic and vagus nerves. This helps in relieving the hiccup spasms.
