Diabetes patients are generally at a higher risk of experiencing surgical complications. Meanwhile, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are widely used to manage diabetes. Now, a study has examined whether GLP-1 RAs could reduce surgical complications in 21,772 patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The study found that GLP-1 RA prescriptions were associated with a significantly reduced risk of 30-day readmission, postoperative wound dehiscence, and hematoma in diabetes patients undergoing surgery.
However, no significant differences were observed in infection or bleeding rates between the GLP-1 RA and control groups. These findings suggest that GLP-1 RAs may help mitigate certain surgical complications in diabetes patients after surgery.
